Oh, I have watched the 1992 film so many times when my kids were younger! Robin Williams as the Genie makes the film, he was such a comedy icon. Thank you for the reminder of this classic movie :)
I think it's very interesting to see how far things have gone. Robin Williams was such a talent and I think his ability to act was captured in his voice making that role come to life. Animation has come so far. It would be rather interesting to see what could be done with it today. I don't believe the film with Will Smith can be counted when speaking of animation, simply because it wasn't animation. It was however hugely interesting. They did a great job on it. Personally, I love seeing visual art and knowing that multiple people worked together in order to share such amazing things with the world. Although, I am also a HUGE lover of any form of acting, etc. It seems easier for some to look at acting or singing and see the talent behind it. Yet, in reality visual art takes talent as well.Yet, in many cases that talent is either forgotten or ignored. Interesting read!!!
One of my absolute favourites, although the London stage version was VERY disappointing...hard to live up to Mr Williams. Sadly, I once queued in the baking heat with my 4 year old daughter to meet Jafar, but when we got to the front of the queue, and he was about 8ft tall, she had frightened hysterics. Not a good memory...
When I read the original version of the story in the Arabian Nights, I was surprised at how elaborate it was compared to these animated versions. A lot of it got left on the cutting room floor.
But I would say, for better or worse, the Disney animated version is the one most people know.
It is a great film. Yes I read it a couple of years ago and found Aladdin a much less noble character (he seems pro slavery and probably racist). It's moral greyness probably makes for a more interesting tale.
Also, I didn't realise he was Chinese, presumably a Uyghur, I can't think of anywhere else in China that could have had a sultan. It go me thinking about it's origin.
This brought back some memories! Robin Williams plays such an iconic role in this cartoon - I watched the film over and over when I was younger. I didn’t know there were so many versions of Aladdin, and just how successful it was when it first came out. Thank you for sharing x

Oh hell yeah 🤩
Agreed. They know how to make a movie stick, oh and to make money too 😎

It’s a total classic. That’s a sad story 🥲. Thanks for reposting the Robin Williams detail.😁
I still want a flying carpet.

Great film and poor, wonderful Robin Williams. Didn’t know that about the salary he took. Thanks for another fun exploration, Jon.
