Aladdin: A Magical Journey Through Time

Welcome to Animated. This week is a little curveball of fun as I look at the history of an animated classic, Aladdin. I am sure that, for many people, the 1992 Robin Williams Disney classic will spring to mind, but there is more to be let out of the lamp as I look at this classic story.

History 

Aladdin is an enduring story in One Thousand and One Nights, thought to date back to the ninth century.  In animation, a short film made in 1934, Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, starts our journey. This minor success gave way to Popeye playing Aladdin in a cartoon with the same title in 1939.

Although there were many versions of the story throughout the following decades, including one with a musical score by Cole Porter, these only served to develop the story in the common psyche. Globally, the 1970 French animation of the story Aladdin and his Magic Lamp and the Japanese Anime film Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp in 1982 helped to establish the story further.

All of this paved the path to the incredible success of the now classic 1992 Disney Aladdin, which was the highest-grossing film of the year (not just the highest-grossing animated film) with $504 million* in global sales and starred the late Robin Williams as Genie. * This figure can vary wildly and is an average from research

After this, the two sequels and the animated TV series brought about the Aladdin musical, which ran from 2003 to 2016. 

As the Disney canon progressed, a further live-action follow-up in 2019 was directed by Guy Ritchie and starred Will Smith as Genie.

Although there have been rumours of more animation on Disney +, this has been chiefly seen with Descendants, which became hugely popular from 2015 to 2019.

Plotline

At the core of Aladdin's animated adaptations lies the timeless tale of a street-smart young man who discovers a magical lamp containing a wish-granting genie. 

Set in the fictional city of Agrabah, the story weaves elements of adventure, romance, and comedy as Aladdin, with the help of his friends and the genie's magic, endeavours to win the heart of Princess Jasmine and overcome the nefarious schemes of sorcerer Jafar.

Although some changes inevitably happen with the animation. Disney tries to stay true to the original simple story.

Merchandise

The popularity of Aladdin transcended the screen and led to an array of merchandise. From toys and clothing to home décor and accessories, the animated Aladdin franchise has left an indelible mark on consumer products from their enchanting characters and vibrant settings.

At its height in the early 1990s, merchandise sales soared, and many estimate sales of approximately $218m.

Characters

The animated versions of Aladdin introduced audiences to a memorable cast of characters. Each character contributes to the narrative's depth and charm, from the charming and resourceful Aladdin to the spirited and independent Princess Jasmine. 

Of course, the larger-than-life Genie, voiced by the legendary Robin Williams, remains an iconic figure in animation history, with his quick wit and magical antics providing comic relief and emotional resonance.

Jafar is another crucial character who plays off well against each other in the Disney adaptation and others.

Finally, in the Disney version, we have Abu, Aladdin's sidekick, and Iago, Jafar’s sidekick, who both add depth to the movie by playing on the different characteristics of their owners.

Aladdin's animated adventures have transcended cultural boundaries, captivating audiences worldwide. The films have been translated into numerous languages, allowing people from different corners of the globe to experience the magic of Agrabah. 

The universal themes of friendship, love, and the pursuit of dreams have made Aladdin a genuinely remarkable story that resonates with diverse audiences.

• The character of Aladdin has roots in Middle Eastern folktales, with the story being one of the "One Thousand and One Nights."

• Robin Williams, who voiced the Genie in the 1992 film, improvised much of his dialogue, moving away from the original script and contributing to the character's dynamic and unique persona.

• The animated series Aladdin: The Animated Series expanded the Aladdin universe with new adventures, further exploring the characters and settings introduced in the film.

• Robin Williams accepted $75,000 to play the role rather than $8m to ensure his voice wouldn’t be used to sell merchandise.
