I grew up watching the reruns in the early 70s. It gave me a grand sense of optimism for the future. I just knew that robots and AI would be there to help with domestic and mundane chores, rather than come for the jobs of artists and creators. Whomp whomp!
The show has becoming something that exists in both the past and future. Some of the episodes of the original '60s episodes, which often draw on very cringe-worthy stereotypes (e.g. women as "bad" drivers) that mark it as a product of the mid-20th century. At the same time, the technology presented on the program would eventually have many counterparts in real life!
And certainly, Mr. Spacely's capricious tyranny made me fear as a child for eventually having to work for someone like that as an adult, though the historical circumstances which produced the stereotypical figure of which he is a part largely no longer exist.
Love the Jetsons! I’d like to go back to this now with my son - thanks for the inspiration! I used to imagine living in a world with all their gadgets. So fun.
When I found out it was this old, My brain exploded! Gosh I remember watching it before going to bed on one of the kids channels (Cartoon Network or Fox Kids)
The Jetsons are one of my favorites.

Thanks, Kathleen. It would have been so cool; you are right. I need a Rosey to do the recycling :)

Great piece. You must have done a lot of research on this. I look forward to reading more pieces like that on other cartoons.
