Garfield was one of my favorite comic strips as a kid. I couldn't wait for the Sunday paper when Garfield and all of the comics were in color.

Thanks for sharing this with us all.

Thanks so much for that. I too loved the cartoon strip as they are just so stripped back, simple and funny.

I was a HUGE Garfield fan! I had the books, a stuffed animal, and many other mementos associated with that lovable cat! My mother even made a cat-sized version of it using her hook/rug kit. When she passed away in 2020 I slept with it for several months. I still keep it by my side of the bed!

That is such a great story. I love how you still have the Garfield your mother made, that is such a great story. Thanks for sharing and reading.

I loved Garfield and his sarcasm! As a cat lover, he definitely had the kind of personality I can imagine most feline's embracing :) I particularly remember the craze of the stuffed Garfield plushy stuck to the inside of car windows...

Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes were the first comic strips I got into as a kid 😻 They might have influenced me a bit 👨‍🎨🎨

-....and somehow, you forgot to mention his definitive voice actor, Lorenzo Music, who did the honors from the early '80s specials until he died in 2001. It's his voice I think of reading the strip.

- U.S. Acres (known as Orson's Farm in the UK)-....because the American title was too blatantly patriotic? Or because British people don't know what an acre is? (BTW: This is crying out for an animated revival!).

Jon, what a great blast from the past! Garfield was my favorite as a kid. I had the backpack, lunch box, books, etc... and never missed an episode of Garfield and Friends. I don't think I have seen the newer movies but I have a great deal of fondness for this crazy cat and his friends. Thanks!

Thanks for this. It was a bit of a beast to try and write this week as it’s a real giant in animation. I am so glad it brought back some good memories (it did here too). Thanks again for reading and taking the time to comment.

Years ago at work we were talking tattoos. One of the guys dared some of us to have a dragon, or a turtle, Garfield, a hammer and sickle! and a whale. I chose Garfield. His colour has faded quite a bit since 1993, but he’s still there 😄.

Great write-up! I grew up on "Garfield and Friends," so this was a fun nostalgia trip.

There's one moment from the special "Garfield In Paradise" that's lived rent-free in my head for nearly 40 years:

At about the 2:40 mark of the video, the villagers start worshipping this 1950s Chevy, and they chant "Chrome! Chrome! Chrome! Bop-bop-a-re-bop." And then Wolfman Jack starts talking!
