I think Chuck Jones did here what George Harriman did in Krazy Kat - change the form to a degree that we would never be able to see their respective genres again in the same way, and subsequently, get hungry for what we became aware of each of these genres were capable of being. Comic strips could be art. Animation could be art. That both were done within the confines of commercial media enterprises were all the more remarkable.
Chuck Jones was as much a master for what he achieved in surfing those tough waves.
Charles Martin Jones is one of the true auteurs of the animated short film. He showed entire generations of people how to do animation and comedy with style and intelligence, and aspects of his legacy still remain vital parts of animation production now.
You are so right, and I love the word auteur, which he certainly is. Thanks, David, for always taking the time to read and comment. I really appreciate it. Jon
Gosh this is ingrained deep in the memory. Off to see if I can find it on YouTube. Great analysis Jon, it’s a really bold and interesting crossover that certainly had a lasting impact. I can’t get over that it was only 7 minutes, felt much longer (in a good way 😂).
Thanks, Claire. It does feel longer for sure. I always think that things like this, although they are a big break, can have ripples beyond what we see in the industry and continue to develop.
I was born in 57
Grew up watching this on local tv cartoon shows on struggling rural TV syations har only cartoons and the Young Rascals, the Marx Bros

I always enjoyed Chuck Jones' take on Tom and Jerry, so this is interesting. But as a big fan of the Ring cycle, I wonder if I would enjoy it?
I always wonder these things on whether to try something and usually take the plunge 😎
We just rewatched this (and One Froggy Evening and Love to Singa) last week. I’ve had the tunes stuck in my head since! Such fun cartoons 😁

Fascinating stuff! I haven't seen this, but it sounds like such an interesting way to blend cultures.
It really is, it is something quite brilliant.
