It seems like a mix of "Peanuts" and the kind of kid-oriented animated shows Hanna-Barbera was making for American TV in the '60s and '70s. Which makes it surprising it didn't cross over to North America- it just might have been "too English" for that.

You are so right. It was certainly very English, which I think made it more popular here but prevented it from travelling.
